Hal Peterson

Professional Background

Hal is a Managing Principal with Columbia Pacific Wealth Management, and leads the firm’s Austin, Texas office. Hal works directly with the firm’s clients, which include family offices, entrepreneurs, endowments, and foundations. Much of Hal’s work involves investment management, asset allocation and investment policy, manager evaluation and selection, and portfolio strategy.

Hal has a long history in the financial advisory business dating back to 1985 in his hometown of Denver, Colorado where he began his career with Kidder Peabody & Co. After two years in Seattle, Hal moved to Austin in 1989. Since arriving in Texas, Hal has managed trust investment businesses for major private banks, and founded an independent investment advisory firm in 2000 which grew to over $1 billion in assets. He was most recently the founder of Mission Hill Advisors, LLC which was acquired by Columbia Pacific Wealth Management in 2018.


Hal has been extensively involved in philanthropy, impact investing, and social innovation through his work with Austin Community Foundation, The Seton Fund, Texas Methodist Foundation, and most recently as a Trustee of Huston-Tillotson University. Hal is an avid tennis player, and enjoys boating on Lake Austin when he is not restoring and riding vintage motorcycles. He lives in Austin with his wife, daughters, and extended family.
